Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation responds to HIV/AIDS

The first case of HIV in India was reported in 1986. The government’s initial response was to start a National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Government of India estimates that in 2006 about 2.45 million Indians are living with HIV with an adult prevalence rate of 0.41%. Main mode of HIV transmission is through unprotected sexual intercourse. Largely India’s epidemic is concentrated in the industrialized states in the south (Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) and the west (Maharashtra) and in the northeastern border (Manipur and Nagaland). In the northeastern border the main mode of transmission is through sharing injecting needles during drug use. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is closely linked with poverty, inequality, illiteracy, gender and human rights

and impacts equally on many different sectors such as industry, education, transport, health, agriculture, etc. It impacts upon every sector alike.  Hence MoHUPA joins hands with MoHFW’s National AIDS Control Organization ( www.nacoonline.org ) in its mission of reversing and halting the HIV epidemic to sustain a long-term response to AIDS.
